The Sitting Volleyball Division of the HVS (Hamburg's Club for the Disabled) organised their eleventh annual tournament.

Initiated in 1989 by the ambitious young Hamburg team with the help of Siemens AG, this tournament has developed over the years into one of the most attractive highlights on the international disabled volleyball scene.

This year 13 teams participated in the Werner von Siemens Cup in Germany's greenest city.

Due to the cancellation of two Egyptian teams, the organiser had to change the competition system into a group of 6 and a group of 7 teams.

The Australian team performed admirably in this very competitive tournament playing against some of Europe's highest level Club teams.

Australia thanks the organisers, in particular Mr Gunther Kruger, for their hospitality, friendship and help throughout the tournament.

Brett Roworth makes a nice tip over the defense

The Aussies made many friends during the tournament

The Australian Captain, Brett Roworth receives a gift from the President of the Hamburg Disabled Sports Association. This was in appreciation of Australia making the effort to travel from the other side of the world to enter their tournament. An invitation to enter next year was also extended.

Tour of Netherlands

Prior to the tournament in Hamburg the team toured a small part of the Netherlands to play a few games.

We were very well looked after by the Dutch organisers and thank Mr Henk Dost for his huge help in arranging all aspects of our tour.

We first travelled to Apledoorn to play two games.

The first was against Sudosa from Assen who defeated us 25-13 / 25-15 / 25-12.

Next we played Alterno from Appledoorn who defeated us 25-15 / 25-18 / 25-13.

The next day we travelled to the lovely town of Utrecht to play the GSVU team. We played 2 games, being defeated in both. The set results of the first game were 25-15 / 25-16 / 25-15 while the second game was 25-14 / 21-25 / 25-8.

Our last game was held in Goor against SNS/Savico who we would meet again in the Von Siemens Cup. They were a particularly strong side with 7 National Players in the team. Australia played admirably against such a strong team losing 3 sets 25-11 / 25-9 / 25-9.
